In Kitakyushu in 2008, I established the Kitakyushu Philosophy Club. We met once a week to read together, in English, philosophical works from the western tradition as well as philosophical works from Japan. The members consisted of myself as well as Japanese nationals who were highly skilled English communicators and who were deeply interested in philosophy, politics and topics concerning Japanese traditional culture. In the summer of 2008, I prepared an 8 week seminar on Kakuzo Okakura's text: The Book of Tea. In this work, Okakura characterizes the aesthetic and ethical ideals of Japanese traditional culture.
A few of my students who attended this seminar 8 years ago, have asked me to give the same seminar so now I am considering doing so. Below is the original seminar outline in English from 2008. I have also included a Japanese translation of the original English which was done by my long time student Ayumi, who also studied The Book of Tea with me.
2008年、北九州において北九州哲学クラブを設立しました。週に１度集まり、伝統的な西洋の哲学作品や日本の作品ともに英語で一緒に読み進めていきました。メンバーは私自身と、哲学・政治や日本文化について深く興味を持っている英語上級者の日本人で成っていました。2008年夏に、岡倉覚三著書の『茶の本』を使用して８週間にわたってのセミナーを用意しました。この作品で岡倉は、伝統的日本文化の美的・倫理的理想を述べています。
８年前にこのセミナーに出席された方の中には、もう一度同じセミナーをしてほしいと言われる方もいらっしゃったので現在検討しています。下記は2008年度にセミナーで使用した英文の概要と、その日本語訳です。日本語訳は、当教室に長く通っていただいている生徒さんのあゆみさんによるものです。彼女もまた『茶の本』を私と勉強されました。

本セミナーは、岡倉覚三著書『茶の本』を英語で読み、話し合うことによって、侘び・寂び(Wabi-Sabi)の意味を一緒に探求していくことを目的としています。
英語を習得していた岡倉は、「茶道」、つまり侘び・寂びの基本的な美的・倫理的理想を西洋に明示しようと1906年に『茶の本』を出版しました。本書に「茶道は、それがまぎれもなく生の術である…我々の住まい、習慣、衣食、陶器、漆器、絵画、そして文学までもが茶道の影響を受けています。」と記載があるように、岡倉によると、歴史的に禅宗の教訓の影響を受けてきた茶道の美的・倫理的理想は、日本人の考えや文化のあらゆる側面に浸透しているとのことです。岡倉は自身のインスピレーションの源となったこの「茶道」に焦点を当てることによって、日本人の魂である「生の述」を捉えようとしています。
本セミナーでは、「茶道(Teaism)」の理想を岡倉目線で考え、侘び・寂びに対する理解を深めるとともに、岡倉が言及する様々なテーマ(道教・儒教・禅宗・華道・武道・音楽・詩・絵画)についても詳しく学んでいきます。そして最も重要なことになりますが、岡倉は本書を通じて茶道倫理の大切さを強調しています。ですので、この茶道における倫理や理想を、自分自身を高めるための手段として、どのように私たちの日常生活にあてはめられるかを探っていきます。つまり、私たちは『茶の本』から現代社会を生きていくうえで何を学べるのかを一緒に考えていきます。

さらに、本セミナーは、侘び・寂びの意味を探求していくことに加え、複雑な英語を使用しながら、自身の考えを理論的に考察・表現していくので、中級・上級の英語学習者が、英語力に更に磨きをかける絶好の機会となっております。

The objective of
this seminar is to explore together the meaning of Wabi-Sabi by reading and discussing in English Okakura’s The Book of Tea.
Having mastered the English language, Okakura wrote The Book of Tea in 1906 as he endeavored
to articulate to the Western world the fundamental aesthetic and ethical ideals
of “Teaism”茶道namely, Wabi-Sabi. According to Okakura, these Tea-ideals, which
were historically inspired by the precepts of Zen Buddhism, permeate all
aspects of Japanese thinking and culture, as Okakura writes: “Teaism represents so much of our Art of
Life…Our home and habitats, costume and cuisine, porcelain, lacquer, painting –
our very literature—all have been subject to its influence.” Thus, Okakura attempts to capture the spirit
of the Japanese “Art of Life,” by
illuminating one of its primary sources of inspiration --- “Teaism.”
In this seminar
we will examine Okakura’s characterization of the ideals of “Teaism” to develop
a greater understanding of Wabi-Sabi
as well as expand on the many themes he touches upon; Taoism, Confucianism, Zen Buddhism, The Cult of Flowers 華道,
Martial Arts武道, music, poetry and painting. Most importantly, throughout
the Book of Tea, Okakura emphasizes
the importance of the ethics of the tea ceremony. In this seminar we will attempt to discover
how we can apply these ethics and ideals to our everyday life as a way of
empowering ourselves, in other words, what can we learn from the Book of Tea about how to live our lives?

seminar will consist of 8 meetings each 90 minutes in length; one meeting for
each chapter plus an introductory meeting.

Each meeting will consist
of a lecture and an open group discussion. The Lecture,
which will be delivered by Thom
Mallinos, is designed to guide the participants through the books’ complex
language in order to access its central themes and ideas.
Open discussion is designed to create a free space where participants can interact with one another in order to
complement, challenge and compound each other’s thoughts and ultimately give
birth to new perspectives. In other
words, participants will have the opportunity to share their own reflections on
Wabi-Sabi as well as suggest
alternative themes and topics related to the seminar objective.
In addition to exploring the meaning of Wabi-Sabi, this seminar is devised to
give intermediate and advanced English students the opportunity to develop
their English ability by challenging them to think and express themselves
theoretically while reading and using complex language and vocabulary.
